EU Strategy for the Danube Region: Fifteen Years of Cooperation and Cohesion

The European Commission has opened a public consultation on the forthcoming Skills Portability Initiative, designed to enhance the visibility of skills and make it easier for qualified professionals to live and work across Europe.

Fifteen years ago, the European Union and the countries of the Danube Region made a joint commitment to cooperate across borders in order to address common challenges and fully realise the Region’s potential.

In December 2025, the European Council tasked the European Commission with developing an EU Strategy for the Atlantic Macro-Region. This initiative builds on the experience of existing macro-regional strategies and is aligned with the Atlantic Maritime Strategy, while fully respecting Member State competences and the principle of budgetary neutrality.

On 16 September 2025, the Council of the European Union officially adopted its Conclusions on the Fifth Report on the Implementation of EU Macro-Regional Strategies (MRS), which was published by the European Commission earlier this year.

On July 16, 2025, the European Commission presented its proposal for the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) covering 2028–2034. This plan outlines a more streamlined approach to EU funding, which carries important consequences for the EU Strategy for the Adriatic-Ionian Region (EUSAIR).

The European Commission has released its fifth biennial report on EU macro-regional strategies, assessing developments between mid-2022 and mid-2024 across four major initiatives: those covering the Baltic Sea, Danube, Adriatic-Ionian, and Alpine regions.
